Dispatch answering now

A burst pipe spraying water beside the main shut-off

While the crew is on the way

Four things that limit the damage. Do them in this order if it's safe.

1

Shut off the main

Turn the main valve clockwise, usually where the water line enters the house.

2

Turn off the water heater

Switch gas to pilot or turn off the breaker so the tank isn't heating empty.

3

Stay clear of power

If water is near outlets or the panel, don't touch them. Tell the dispatcher.

4

Photograph everything

Take photos before you mop up. Your insurer will ask, and we'll add ours.

What counts as an emergency

If you're not sure, call. We'll tell you honestly whether it can wait until morning.

Burst or leaking pipes

No water at all

Sewage backing up

Overflowing toilet

Leaking water heater

No hot water in winter

Gas smell near appliances
